When Henry II recalled English clerks from the University of Paris in 1167, they found a permanent home in “Oxenaforde,” an ancient market town at the confluence of the Thames and Cherwell. Over the following century, what began as a loose community of clerical scholars developed a distinctive institutional structure. Rather than dwelling in private halls and town lodgings, they gathered into self-governing, endowed colleges—societies where masters and students lived, dined, studied, and worshiped; and because nearly all of these scholars were in major or minor Orders, the chapel was the beating heart of collegiate life. Far more than places of occasional assembly, these sacred spaces saw constant use, with a daily cycle of Mass, the Divine Office, and intercessory prayer. Yet across eight centuries of architectural and religious change—from medieval Gothic and post-Restoration classical to the Victorian Gothic Revival—these chapels reflect an unbroken tradition of corporate worship, enriched and framed by sacred art.
